We use Penteo’s stem bypass to decorrelate”vanilla” stems and bring them further into the room. We love it on drums, employing Penteo as a “crush” effect by heavily compressing the duplicated signal before using Penteo to generate more excitement from the drums.

Decorrelate Individual Channels

Stem Bypass

Removes the Atmos channel pair, redistributing energy within your upmix to create enhanced spatial separation and punch.

Ideal for carving space between vocals & music or keeping effects out of the rears.

Preserve or Override ITU

Every Stem Bypass downmixes 100% ITU to source, but often creative mixing goals supersede the need for downmix compatibility.

When deactivated, all controls are enabled for full downmix creativity with any incompatibility ndicated on Penteo’s ITU Downmix Monitor.

Stem Passthrough

Removes the Surround channel pair redistributing energy within your upmix, then the original input pair is automatically blended into the upmix.

Passthrough keeps iconic Surround-field channel pairs – such as a well-known L/R song – in the upmixed mix with zero extra bussing needed.

I needed to upmix Stereo to 7.0.4 Atmos for a contemporary classical composition. I only had a wet track with a baked-in long reverb. I used Stem Bypass in the Decorrelation Suite – it was so effective!

Divergence Dial

Take control how Penteo slices and separates diffuse sound energy between front & surround channels.

Dial the balance between a tightly focused front-stage to more spatial diffusion with a greater sense of surrounding depth.

Immersion DSP

Depth setting tightens control over direct and diffuse energy resulting in less dry energy distribution and more ambients to the Surround channels.

Depth is the new session default, ‘Vintage’ setting can be selected for an alternative immersion effect.

Total Channel Control

Fast upmix changes from dedicated fader, diffuse, shelf, boost/tilt, vocal isolation & sound shaping modes are on each channel.

Unless disabled, smart downmix compliance defaults guarantee that no energy is lost in the upmix.

Decorrelate LFE – Get more thump, rumble and upmix punch

Expanded Main LFE Controls

Add up to 12 dB and boost LFE content without removing LF energy from the main channels or split LFE. Set crossover frequencies, or use Diverge to avoid overloading the center channel.

ITU-R 1384 and Music

Matches the ITU spec to prevent clipping, this setting attenuates the input main channel LFE by -10dB. For creative LFE control for music stems, use Music setting which does not attenuate the LFE thereby allows complete creative control.

Penteo works really well in all my musical workflows. I use it to broaden tracks into the immersive soundscape using decorrelation which results in an excellent ‘live arena’ feel to my audio stems.

Sub-Harmonic Synthesis

Add more low frequency rumble, thump and punch with Penteo’s synthesized sub-harmonic LFE controls. Take precise control over three frequency bands that can be individually muted or linked to other bands for faster workflows.

I use Penteo extensively because it delivers the best and most cohesive upmix to Dolby Atmos 9.1.6. I can add LFE content without overbalancing the low end using the LFE Split control.

Perfect for pop, rock, and modern productions that demand punchy, controlled low end.

Penteo is technically the best upmixer, you have all the possible conversions from every format to every format and the sound decorrelation is done to perfection because you can choose carefully what will be done with the original signal.

You can decorrelate the entire stereo signal and spread it across all available speakers. Or you can leave the original signal unprocessed, while the decorrelated sound is spread across the surround speakers; or remove the original signal and only keep the decorrelated sound.
